Ahead of the Game
© Anne Sumner 2018
Me and the man, we walked out one day
And the breeze it was blowing our silence away
And I turned at the gate, and he scolded me
He said “never look back once you leave
’Cause you know that your love turns to sand
Comes crumbling down on her knees
And her face blows away in the wind”
He was always ahead of the game
He was chasing the demons away
If you wanted to know how I feel
It was clear as the day
Look at him go, one of the luckiest men in the world
Ever the onslaught of charm with the girls
Let the conquest unfold
He fights wars without weapons
His swords turn to ribbons and braids in her hair
And when she was gone, he’d move on
And he’d claim that she’d never been there
He was always ahead of the game
He was chasing the demons away
If you wanted to know how I feel
It was clear as the day
Directionless man, inherited vessels of untoward hue
Unwitting captain of mutineer crew
What’s he trying to do?
Ask the man if he’s ready to leave and it takes him an age to decide
Worldly possessions stacked up on the beach
But it all slips away on the tide
He was always ahead of the game
He was chasing the demons away
If you wanted to know how I feel
It was clear as the day
I look at him now, so hard to intimidate
Nothing brings down the man who cannot be fazed
I would give in, if he called me to him
And maybe one day when the scars start to fade
And the memories don’t burn
You’ll dig deep in your brain, find the courage to say
What you’ve known all along
He was always ahead of the game
He was chasing the demons away
If you wanted to know how I feel
It was clear as the day
