Behind The Lines

When first we met
A night I'll not forget
My pen to paper set
And of our love a record kept
And when he left
To him the book I gave
That he be fierce and brave
Spurred on by love we'd yet to make
And blind my heart
Could never see
Nor conceive what a life without him means

Don't cry for me
I am your heart's desire
Forever marching home
To you I'm on my way
Don't cry for me

And when he rode
He did with valour ride
Full of his nation's pride
With might and justice on his side
And when he read
My book was all he knew
And as he read it through
Our love within its pages grew
Behind the lines
In darker days
He'd read the words I had on the pages laid

Don't cry for me
I am your heart's desire
Forever marching home
To you I'm on my way
Don't cry for me

And when he fell
He was the last to fall
His comrades heroes all
To the last man to glory borne
His heart was cold
His feet were colder still
And I grow older still
The unrelenting years are cruel
And summoned he
No angels there
In the dark, laid his wounds to shadows bare

Don't cry for me
I am your heart's desire
Forever marching home
To you I'm on my way
Don't cry for me
