Sunlight

He was a wise man and I was not
Ready for his wisdom
I’m always surprised that he thinks I’ve got
Anything to give him
But he sees me through the veil
Of something I don’t understand
And he tells a different tale
About the person that I am
And I’ve yet to see him fail
Though I know that he is only human
And we were friends, and it was sweet
Like a childhood memory
And I was lost, incomplete
Until you smiled at me
And I’m old enough to know
It’s not you who makes me whole
But when I opened my eyes
You were my sunlight
My imagination was taking flight
If I thought we’d ever get there
I was a fool that I thought we might
Have many years together
But the heart wants what it wants
And I don’t try to tone it down
He’ll be here and he’ll be gone
Serially skipping town
And still he’ll be my shining one
Though I know that he is only human
And we were friends, and it was sweet
Like a childhood memory
And I was lost, incomplete
Until you smiled at me
And I’m old enough to know
It’s not you who makes me whole
But when I opened my eyes
You were my sunlight
You were my sunlight
And I have been
Love’s eternal victim and
I’ve been wishing
Time would see me with him
But love comes too late
We can’t escape
That we are only human
And we were friends, and it was sweet
Like a childhood memory
And I was lost, incomplete
Until you smiled at me
And I’m old enough to know
It’s not you who makes me whole
But when I opened my eyes
You were my sunlight
And we were friends, and it was sweet
Like a childhood memory
And I was lost, incomplete
Until you smiled at me
And I’m old enough to know
It’s not you who makes me whole
But when I opened my eyes
You were my sunlight
You were my sunlight
